Can Pest Control Spray Harm Dogs?

Most pest control treatments do not affect pets and are considered safe; however, some pest sprays may end up proving harmful due to the pesticides inside if consumed. Given that dogs use their noses to explore everything, they can quickly end up inhaling, absorbing, or ingesting pesticides.

As such, we recommend keeping your dog away from the treated areas for a couple of hours after application. After this, it should be safe for your dog to be in and around the area. Use caution when undergoing pest control with dogs around.

How Does Pest Control Spray Work?

Pest sprays work to kill pests in different ways, depending on the type of pest. In saying this, most sprays designed for the home use pyrethrin as their active ingredient. When cockroaches, ants or other pests chew or walk on objects sprayed with pest spray, these pyrethroid chemicals stop the bugs almost instantly with a ‘knockdown effect’. This ‘knockdown effect’ is generated as the chemicals within the spray prevent nerves from transmitting impulses or signals, resulting in paralysis of all major systems, and eventually death.

In contrast, mosquito sprays work to confuse flying pests by attracting them to a smell away from your body. Choose whatever pest spray is most effective for that particular pest to see successful results.

How to Spray Pest Control in Home?

Before using pest sprays in the home, cover all food processing surfaces and utensils and remove all exposed food from the area. Most of Hovex’s sprays are safe to use indoors and are odourless.

Apply the spray into cracks and crevices where pests regularly reside. Other areas include baseboards, corners, storage areas, closets, near water pipes, doors, windows, attics, eaves, behind appliances and under shelves or drawers.

How Often Should I Use Pest Control Spray?

You should use pest sprays whenever a pest issue has been noticed. In order to prevent the problem from worsening, you should apply pest control measures to cut the problem off before it begins.

As a rule of thumb, it is worth spraying for pests at home at least once a year, if not more, as a preventative measure. This will also come in handy if there are pests in your home that haven’t been noticed yet. The more pest control measures you take, the higher the likelihood that you’ll be free of any pest infestations.

Is Pest Control Spray Safe?

Pesticides use chemicals that are designed to kill and harm pests, not humans. In saying this, this does not mean they can’t be harmful to humans when used carelessly as they are toxic.

For insect sprays to be harmful in a way that would pose serious health risks, you’d have to ingest it or use it in a way that would result in large amounts of the liquid getting into your system.

Exposure to pesticides may result in irritation to the eye, nose, or throat. Symptoms due to pesticide exposure may include headaches, dizziness, muscular weakness, or nausea.
